Sonoma County voters will decide the fate of large farms this November. Whatever side of the fence you’re on, it’s good to know the issues facing us in the upcoming voting season, especially ones that effect so many local businesses.
Measure J, proposed by the Coalition To End Factory Farming aims to shut down at least 24 poultry and dairy farms in Sonoma County. More than 37,000 signatures were gathered to place the measure on the ballot this November. Proponents of the bill say large farms are bad for animals, the environment, local farmers, and public health. They claim large Sonoma County farms “harm animals, pollute our air and water, and spread disease.”
The Sonoma County Farm Bureau strongly opposes this measure, viewing it as a significant threat to the livelihoods of local farmers. In addition, they argue that if this measure passes it will drive up local food prices, create scarcity of local dairy and poultry products, increase emissions, and leave many without work. They argue that California’s Proposition 12, arguably the nation’s strongest animal welfare law, already provides protections against the continued confinement of animals.
